The problem
A naive "today minus hire date" calculation overstates real service length for anyone who has taken extended, unpaid, or protected leave. HR teams patch this by hand in spreadsheets, recalculating every time someone is hired, promoted, or returns from a suspension — and the errors surface only during a payroll audit or a severance dispute.
The solution
Flag any Time Off type as contract-suspending, and validated leaves of that type are automatically netted out of the employee's seniority the moment they are approved. Every adjustment is recorded in a visible audit trail, contract status shows "Suspending" in real time, and a daily job keeps ongoing tenure current — no manual upkeep, no guesswork.

Seniority Net of Suspensions
Service length in years, months, and days is automatically computed net of every validated contract-suspending leave — the figure HR can defend in an audit.
Suspension Flag on Time Off Types
Mark any Time Off type — parental leave, military service, sabbatical, long-term sick, disciplinary — as contract-suspending, with a category recorded for reporting.
Consistency Enforcement
Suspension settings are validated at save time: a suspending type must be an absence with a declared category, preventing misconfiguration before it reaches payroll or seniority.
Contract Status: Suspending
Contract status automatically reflects "Suspending" while a validated suspension is active, and returns to Running the moment it ends — filterable and groupable on the contract list.
Full Audit Trail
Every seniority adjustment is recorded with the source leave, category, date span, and day count — so HR can show exactly which suspension reduced a person's tenure and by how much.
Validated Leaves Only
Draft and refused suspension leaves never touch seniority. Adjustments are created only on validation and automatically removed if a leave is refused or cancelled.
Tenure Search & Filters
Find employees past 1, 5, or 10 years of service, or currently suspended, directly from the employee list — seniority is a queryable dimension, not just a display value.
Seniority Analysis Report
A dedicated pivot, graph, and list report breaks down seniority and suspended days by department and manager, turning tenure into workforce-planning intelligence.
Daily Recompute & Reminders
A daily scheduled job keeps ongoing tenure current and automatically reminds HR when a suspension is about to end, so return-to-work follow-up never slips.
How it works
Flag suspending leave types
Mark Time Off types such as parental leave or sabbatical as contract-suspending and assign a category.
Employee takes leave
The employee requests time off against a suspension-flagged type as part of the normal Time Off workflow.
Leave is validated
Once the leave is approved, its span is automatically netted out of seniority and logged as an audit-trail adjustment.
Track tenure & suspensions
HR reviews net seniority, contract status, and adjustments on the employee record, list, and seniority report at any time.
