POS Lay-By turns Odoo Point of Sale into a full layaway counter: take a deposit, hold the goods, collect the balance in installments, and release the order automatically once it is paid in full.
The problem
Cashiers have no way to take a deposit, hold goods, and collect the rest later without leaving POS for spreadsheets or paper ledgers. Status lives nowhere reliable, so managers cannot see who owes what, and session close-out becomes a manual reconciliation exercise.
The solution
POS Lay-By adds a native reserve-and-collect workflow to Point of Sale: a Lay-By button records the deposit as a real POS payment, tracks the balance automatically, and a unified dashboard shows every open order with one-click collect and cancel actions all the way through to automatic release.

Every capability below is implemented in the module.
Start a Lay-By from checkout
A dedicated Lay-By control button on the POS product screen converts the current order into a reserved layaway, so the whole workflow stays inside checkout instead of a separate back-office screen.
Deposit & balance tracking
Every payment, including the initial POS deposit, is logged as an installment. Deposit paid, remaining balance, and payment progress recompute automatically on every collection.
Configurable deposit rules
Set a suggested deposit percentage and a minimum deposit amount per POS configuration. The suggested amount is pre-filled for the cashier when a Lay-By is opened.
Guided balance collection
A collect-balance wizard records top-up payments against the order, automatically moves the order to Ready for Collection once the balance reaches zero, and can apply a configurable early-payment discount.
Full order lifecycle
Every Lay-By order follows a clear Reserved, Ready for Collection, Collected, or Cancelled status, shown on a statusbar and tracked with chatter messages at each step.
Deposit refund on cancellation
A cancellation wizard lets staff refund the deposit in full, forfeit it, or issue a partial refund, recording the decision and reason directly on the order.
Unified Lay-By dashboard
A kanban and list dashboard shows every Lay-By order grouped by status, with deposit, balance, progress, and overdue indicators, plus inline Collect and Cancel actions on every row.
Hold expiry & automated reminders
A daily scheduled action sends balance-due and overdue email reminders, and can automatically release and cancel expired holds once a configurable grace period passes.
Customer portal & reporting
Customers can view their open Lay-By orders and balances from the customer portal. Managers get close-session Lay-By totals and a Lay-By analysis report for deposits, balances, and order counts.
How it works
Reserve at checkout
Cashier adds products to the order, selects the customer, and taps Lay-By to open the deposit popup.
Take the deposit
The suggested deposit is pre-filled from the store’s configured rules; the cashier confirms the amount and tenders payment as usual.
Collect installments
On return visits, staff use the Collect wizard to record top-up payments until the balance reaches zero.
Release the order
Once fully paid, the order moves to Ready for Collection and then Collected, releasing the goods to the customer.
