The problem
Make-to-order and engineer-to-order manufacturers sell products configured per customer, but standard Odoo only supports pre-built product variants and Bills of Materials. Every new dimension, material, or option multiplies into thousands of variant records, quoting slows to a crawl, and salespeople often rebuild the quote in a spreadsheet, losing the link between what was sold and what has to be built.
The solution
Flag a product as configurable and start every quote from a known-good base BoM, then configure components, operations, and byproducts inline from the sale order. Cost, margin, and price update live, a quote-specific BoM is generated without touching the master, and a Manufacturing Order is reliably created the moment the order is confirmed.

Configurable products with a base BoM
Flag any product as configurable and pin a known-good base Bill of Materials so every quote starts from proven data, not a blank slate.
Multi-level component tree
Add, remove, swap, and adjust quantities on components at any level of a self-referential tree, with automatic level tracking and cycle protection.
Labor and operation editor
Reassign work centers and adjust cycle time and duration per operation; cost per hour flows straight from the work center into the total.
Byproduct credits
Record byproducts recovered during production and net their value straight off the total cost.
Live hierarchical cost roll-up
Components plus labor minus byproduct credits recompute automatically into total cost, unit cost, suggested price, and margin on every edit.
Configurable markup to price
Set a markup percentage per product; the suggested unit price is computed automatically and can be written straight back to the sale order line.
Rule-based validation gates
Define require and exclude rules between components (for example, "Lock Assembly requires Hinge Set") so invalid configurations are caught before they are quoted.
Variant-free BoM generation
Generate a quote-specific Bill of Materials the moment a configuration is valid, without touching or duplicating the master BoM.
Reliable manufacturing hand-off
Confirming the sales order automatically creates the linked Manufacturing Order from the generated BoM, idempotently and regardless of the confirming user's manufacturing permissions.
How it works
Flag the product
Mark a product configurable and set its base BoM and default markup on the product form.
Configure from the quote
Click Configure on the sale order line to open a full configuration pre-loaded from the base BoM.
Review cost and margin
Adjust components, operations, and byproducts and watch cost, margin, and price recompute live, with rule violations flagged.
Confirm and produce
Generate the quote-specific BoM, confirm the order, and the Manufacturing Order is created automatically.
