Stop the sandwich leave loophole, for good
Detect leave requests that bridge weekends and public holidays, warn employees before they submit, and let HR flag or deduct the bridged days from one dedicated policy page with a full audit trail.
The problem
Employees can book a Friday and the following Monday off and walk away with four calendar days of rest for the price of two days of leave balance. HR has to spot these bridging requests by eye, correct balances after the fact, and then defend the decision when an employee asks why a weekend got charged. Existing apps either bury the setting inside working-time configuration, enforce it with no visibility, or detect it with no way to explain it to the employee before they submit.
The solution
Sandwich Leave Policy detects bridging requests automatically, using each employee’s real working calendar and your public holidays, then applies a policy you configure on a dedicated HR page: flag the request, deduct the bridged days from the balance, or both. Employees see the consequence before they submit, HR gets a searchable audit log and a by-department dashboard, and every decision stays explainable.
Everything the sandwich rule needs, in one app
Every capability below is implemented in the module.
Automatic bridge detection
Detects requests that bridge weekends and/or public holidays using the employee’s actual working calendar, including non-standard schedules.
Configurable deduction
Choose flag-only or flag-and-deduct per policy, so bridged days affect the leave balance only when you decide they should.
Dedicated policy page
All sandwich-rule settings live on their own HR Policy page under Time Off Configuration, not buried inside working-time settings.
Department & employee scoping
Scope a policy to specific departments and exempt individual employees for contractual exceptions.
Leave-type exemptions
Exempt chosen leave types, such as sick leave, from the sandwich rule so it matches your real HR policy.
Request-length thresholds
Apply the rule only to requests up to a configurable number of days, avoiding an all-or-nothing policy.
Escalation flag
Flag requests for manager review once bridged days reach a configurable threshold.
Pre-submit employee warning
Shows employees the exact sandwich consequence on the leave form before they submit, not after.
Audit log & department dashboard
Every detected sandwich leave is recorded in a searchable log with a graph dashboard broken down by department.
How it works
Configure the policy
Set the scope, deduction mode, thresholds, and department or employee exemptions on the dedicated Sandwich Leave Policy page.
Employee requests leave
The employee creates a time off request as usual. If it bridges a weekend or public holiday, they see the sandwich warning before submitting.
Policy applies automatically
The request is flagged with a ribbon on the leave form, and the balance is adjusted automatically when deduction is enabled.
HR reviews and reports
Use the Sandwich Leaves filter and audit log to review every detection, and the department dashboard to track trends.
Frequently asked
No sales fog. If your question isn't here, email us and we'll answer it the same way.
Only if you choose to. Each policy defaults to flag-only, so bridged days are shown but never deducted unless you switch the policy to flag and deduct.
